FAY GODWIN - ‘UNDER A TURBULENT SKY/
O Dan Awyr Cythryblus’

persPEctives ON a great British photographer

THE BACKGROUND TO OUR NEW EXHIBITION: You might remember our first show of Fay Godwin’s photographs at MoMA Machynlleth in 2017, a selection of the ‘Drovers’ Roads of Wales’ prints on temporary loan from The National Library of Wales, plus 18 new gelatin-silver prints, each selected by photographers, photo-historians, family and close friends providing their own personal perspective on their chosen photograph.

ADDITIONAL PRINTS: As a result of that show, we made further contacts, expanding the number of the new prints to 27. We toured it, minus the Drovers’ Roads prints, under the title ‘Under a Turbulent Sky’ (a title inspired by photo-historian, Ian Jeffrey’s introduction to Fay Godwin’s ‘Land’, 1985), to the superb Kestle Barton Gallery in Cornwall in the summer of 2023, where the prints looked wonderful on its white walls and in clear Cornwall light. In response, and because we were impatient to have that expanded exhibition seen here, we have repainted Ffotogaleri, in an attempt to replicate that south west light.

THE OPENING: The exhibition will be at both our Ffotogaleri y Gofeb and in the cosier domestic setting of Siop Lyfrau’r Penrallt Gallery Bookshop. ‘Under a Turbulent Sky’, will be opened on Saturday 25 April by Peter Cattrell, who printed each image from the original negatives loaned by The British Library, and to his original instructions. Peter was responsible for printing many of Fay Godwin’s major shows during her life time. The 27 selected prints are accompanied by their extended captions, paying tribute to the significant and lasting contribution Fay Godwin made to British photography.
